Ilyá Bolotowsky (1907-1981) was a Ukrainian-born American artist known for his contributions to abstract art and geometric abstraction. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Bolotowsky immigrated to the United States in 1923 and settled in New York City.

Bolotowsky's artistic journey began with figurative painting, but he soon embraced abstraction, particularly geometric and constructivist styles. Inspired by the work of Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian, he explored the use of simple geometric forms, such as squares, rectangles, and circles, in his compositions.

Throughout his career, Bolotowsky sought to achieve a sense of harmony and balance through the arrangement of these geometric shapes. He favored primary and secondary colors, organizing them with mathematical precision to create dynamic compositions.

Bolotowsky's contribution to art extended beyond his own practice. In the 1930s, he was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group, which aimed to promote abstract art in America. He also taught extensively, passing on his knowledge and passion for abstraction to future generations of artists.

Bolotowsky's work gained recognition, and his paintings were exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide. His geometric abstractions continue to inspire artists today, reflecting a dedication to the principles of abstraction, clarity, and precision.

Ilyá Bolotowsky's enduring artistic legacy lies in his significant role in advancing abstract art and geometric abstraction in America. His exploration of form and color continues to resonate, solidifying him as an influential figure in 20th-century art.
